Why Most People Know Moral Values — But Don't Actually Live By Them
The gap between knowing what's right and actually doing it is bigger than we think — and it's quietly breaking society
Are moral values actively and consistently practiced in our society?
It would seem that many people don’t really understand the true significance of moral values in life. While almost everyone is aware of moral values, they view them merely as something that’s good, or something that God wants them to do.
Because they don’t really understand and appreciate the true significance of such values, they don’t bother putting much effort into practicing such values in their daily lives.
This leads to them thinking and behaving in a more selfish manner, and being less considerate towards other people and the environment.
Moral values aren’t given much priority and instead are placed in the back of their minds.
To effectively tackle this societal issue, people must be taught and made to understand the significance of moral values, especially at a young age, at the level of schools.
Students must consistently be given real-life scenarios revolving around various moral issues, for which they are required to apply their critical thinking skills and inner conscience to determine the right course of action to take.
Along with this, the education system must impress upon students why such moral values are important and relevant in their own personal lives.
Students must be taught that ultimately, it’s moral values that will ensure that humanity essentially remains united and that people will help each other out during times of crisis.
It needs to be consistently inculcated in students, that for the sake of humanity’s survival, moral values are imperative, and it prevents us from sliding into chaos and giving in to our inherent, more harmful primal instincts and behaviour.
Of course, this must be taught in a relatable manner and be connected to students’ own lives by giving them relevant examples.
Only by making the subject matter connected to, and relevant to students’ individual lives, will they truly get the message and take it seriously.
Society needs to truly understand the significance of moral values and firmly practice such values every day. It’s only through such values that our society can achieve long-term unity and prosperity for all its citizens.
